“Any Women Here Today?” – Monty Python Turns a Stoning Into Comedy Chaos

Watch the full video below.

Only Monty Python could place an absurd question at the beginning of a public stoning and transform the entire situation into one of British comedy’s most memorable scenes.

The “Any Women?” sequence from Monty Python’s Life of Brian begins with an official inspecting the crowd. Women are apparently not permitted to attend, yet several have arrived wearing fake beards and speaking in comically deep voices.

Their disguises fool absolutely nobody—except, perhaps, the characters themselves.

The World’s Least Convincing Disguises

When the official asks whether any women are present, the disguised spectators immediately deny everything. They attempt to sound masculine, but their exaggerated voices only make the situation more suspicious.

The visual joke is simple and instantly effective. The audience can clearly see the fake beards and recognize what is happening, while the official is forced to continue his inspection as though this is a serious legal procedure.

Monty Python gets enormous comedy from this contradiction. Everyone knows the rule is being broken, but nobody wants to acknowledge the obvious truth.

The disguises are ridiculous, the denials are unconvincing, and the official’s growing frustration makes the exchange even funnier.

A Crowd That Cannot Wait to Throw Stones

The spectators are not merely watching the punishment. They have arrived carrying stones and appear extremely eager to use them.

The official attempts to explain the rules and maintain order, but the crowd has little patience. They interrupt repeatedly, react dramatically to every forbidden word, and begin throwing stones before receiving permission.

Their enthusiasm becomes more alarming—and more absurd—with every moment.

The accused man tries to defend himself, but his explanation includes the same word that caused the original problem. Instead of helping his case, he gives the spectators another excuse to become outraged.

Soon, the entire proceeding is completely out of control.

Comedy With a Sharp Message

Beneath the fake beards and chaotic stone throwing, the scene offers a clever criticism of mob mentality.

The crowd insists that it is defending morality, yet its members are excited by violence. They demand that rules be respected while openly ignoring the official’s instructions.

Monty Python exposes this hypocrisy by allowing every character to behave with total confidence. Nobody stops to question whether the punishment is reasonable. They are too busy following the crowd and enjoying the spectacle.

That combination of silliness and social observation gives the scene its lasting power.

Why the Scene Remains a Comedy Classic

The “Any Women?” scene succeeds because every element works together. The costumes create immediate visual humor, the dialogue builds the confusion, and the performers maintain completely serious expressions throughout the absurd situation.

There is no need for an elaborate setup. One strange rule, several fake beards, and an impatient crowd are enough to produce an unforgettable sequence.

The scene also demonstrates why Monty Python’s Life of Brian remains so influential. The movie does more than deliver jokes—it uses comedy to challenge authority, conformity, and the strange behavior people accept when everyone else appears to accept it too.

For anyone who loves classic British humor, clever satire, or comedy that becomes funnier with every viewing, this short scene is a perfect example of Monty Python’s brilliance.

The official only wants an answer to one simple question. Unfortunately, the crowd is prepared to offer everything except the truth.
