Buying a new bed should be simple. A customer visits the store, tests a few models and chooses the one offering the greatest comfort.
But when Tim Conway goes shopping for a water bed, even sitting down becomes a major challenge.
What begins as an ordinary furniture-store visit quickly turns into a hilarious physical-comedy disaster. Conway struggles with the moving mattress, the salesperson struggles to remain patient and everyone watching knows the situation will only get worse.
Tim Conway Enters the Water Bed Store
Conway’s character arrives looking for a comfortable place to sleep.
The salesperson introduces him to a water bed and confidently explains its benefits. The mattress is designed to support the body, reduce pressure and create a relaxing sleeping experience.
Conway listens carefully.
Then he attempts to climb onto it.
Almost immediately, the supposedly relaxing product begins behaving like an uncontrollable ocean.
Sitting Down Becomes the First Challenge
A traditional mattress remains still when someone sits on it. A water bed responds to every movement by creating another wave.
Conway lowers himself cautiously onto the edge, expecting the bed to support him. Instead, the water shifts beneath his weight.
His body moves in one direction while the mattress sends him in another.
Conway pauses, studies the bed and tries again.
The audience already understands that lying down will be much more difficult than he expected.
The Water Bed Refuses to Cooperate
Conway’s character seems convinced that the mattress is deliberately working against him.
Every time he adjusts his position, another wave travels through the bed. When he tries to lie flat, the movement lifts another part of his body.
The bed appears to throw him around without ever allowing him to become comfortable.
Conway reacts with growing suspicion.

The Salesperson Tries to Remain Professional
The salesperson continues explaining that the bed is easy to use.
According to the demonstration, customers simply need to relax and allow the water to support them. That advice sounds reasonable—until Conway attempts to follow it.
His body refuses to relax.
The mattress refuses to remain still.
The salesperson begins realizing that this customer may be impossible to help.
The growing frustration provides the perfect contrast to Conway’s calm determination.
Physical Comedy Takes Over the Showroom
The water bed gives Conway an ideal platform for physical comedy.
He can roll, bounce, slide and struggle to regain his balance. Every movement produces another unexpected reaction from the mattress.
Although the scene appears chaotic, the performance requires precise control.
Conway must move in coordination with the bed’s shifting surface. He needs to exaggerate the waves without making the action look completely artificial.
He makes losing control appear effortless while remaining in command of the routine.
Getting Off the Bed Is Even Harder
After struggling to find a comfortable position, Conway finally decides that the water bed may not be right for him.
Unfortunately, leaving is more difficult than arriving.
He attempts to sit up, but the mattress shifts beneath him. He reaches for the edge and discovers that it has moved farther away.
Each effort to escape creates another wave, sending him back toward the middle.
The bed has apparently decided that Conway will remain in the showroom permanently.
Tim Conway’s Expression Makes It Better
Conway never needs to explain why the situation is funny.
His face communicates everything.
At first, he appears curious. Then confusion takes over. Finally, he looks personally offended that a mattress would treat him this way.
Even while bouncing across the bed, he maintains the innocent expression of someone who believes the product—not the customer—is responsible for the problem.
That deadpan commitment transforms a basic physical gag into comedy gold.
