TIM CONWAY’S BUSINESS LUNCH TURNS INTO A FULL-BLOWN LOVE TRIANGLE 😂

adminSeptember 11, 2026

A business lunch should be simple.

You meet.

You discuss business.

You eat.

You leave.

But when Tim Conway and Harvey Korman are involved, even lunch can become an emotional catastrophe.

One classic sketch from The Carol Burnett Show takes the language of business relationships and transforms it into something resembling a dramatic romantic breakup.

Tim Conway plays a businessman meeting Harvey Korman, his former advertising executive.

There is history between them.

A lot of history.

Harvey hasn’t forgotten that Tim moved his business to another advertising man.

In fact, Harvey behaves less like someone who lost a client and more like someone whose lover left him for somebody else.

That’s the central joke.

Everything the characters say makes perfect sense in a business context.

But emotionally?

It sounds like a relationship drama.

Then Steve Lawrence arrives.

He’s Tim’s current advertising man.

Suddenly, the awkward reunion becomes a triangle.

Harvey is the rejected former partner.

Steve is the new partner.

Tim is caught between them.

The language becomes increasingly personal.

Accusations appear.

Feelings get hurt.

And the professional lunch begins resembling a soap opera.

The official Carol Burnett channel describes the sketch in essentially those terms: a friendly business lunch turns into a “sordid love triangle” involving hurt feelings and deceit. It identifies the scene as coming from Season 7, Episode 14.

It’s an excellent example of writing built around double meaning.

The writers don’t need an elaborate location.

They don’t need costumes.

They simply take ordinary business vocabulary and allow the performers to deliver it with completely inappropriate emotional intensity.

“Account.”

“Partner.”

“Relationship.”

“Leaving.”

“Coming back.”

In one context, these are business terms.

In another, they sound romantic.

That’s enough to sustain the entire premise.

Harvey Korman was perfect for the role because few performers could portray wounded dignity as hilariously as he could.

His characters often wanted to maintain control.

They wanted to appear sophisticated.

Then Tim Conway arrived.

Control disappeared.

Tim’s understated performance makes the situation even funnier.

He doesn’t need to behave wildly.

His character’s position between the two men is already absurd.

Steve Lawrence adds the final ingredient.

Now Harvey has someone to compete against.

The scene stops being simply about Harvey resenting Tim.

It becomes Harvey confronting his replacement.

That’s when the metaphor becomes complete.

Three businessmen suddenly behave like characters in a romantic melodrama.

The audience understands exactly what the writers are doing.

And the performers commit completely.

That’s essential.

If the actors acknowledged that the premise was ridiculous, the joke would weaken.

Instead, they treat the emotional conflict seriously.

Harvey looks genuinely hurt.

Steve responds.

Tim tries to navigate the situation.

The more seriously they behave, the funnier the business language becomes.

This style of sketch demonstrates why The Carol Burnett Show could generate comedy without relying entirely on slapstick.

Yes, the program had spectacular physical comedy.

But it also had clever writing.

A single linguistic idea could become an entire scene.

The performers then elevated that idea through timing and reaction.

Conway and Korman were particularly gifted at reaction.

Their comedy didn’t exist only in dialogue.

Watch what happens after a line.

Watch Harvey’s face.

Watch Tim trying not to laugh.

Watch Steve’s reaction.

Sometimes the silence after the punchline becomes another punchline.

That chemistry is difficult to manufacture.

It’s one reason clips involving Conway and Korman remain popular online.

The audience isn’t simply watching fictional characters.

We’re also watching comedians enjoying each other’s performances.

Occasionally, you can almost see the professional actor fighting against the human instinct to laugh.

That creates intimacy with the viewer.

We’re in on the joke.

The sketch is also surprisingly modern in structure.

Its premise can be explained in seconds:

A businessman meets his old advertising executive and his new advertising executive — and it plays like a romantic love triangle.

That’s a perfect short-form hook.

You understand the idea.

Now you want to see how far they’ll take it.

And they take it very far.

That’s why the scene remains entertaining decades later.

Business culture has changed.

Advertising has changed.

Restaurants have changed.

But jealousy?

Rejection?

The awkwardness of seeing someone who replaced you?

Those emotions haven’t changed.

The sketch simply applies them where they don’t belong.

That’s comedy.

And with Tim Conway, Harvey Korman and Steve Lawrence sitting around one restaurant table, a simple business lunch becomes something far more dramatic.

It’s not business anymore. It’s personal — hilariously personal. 😂
