Tim Conway Is Our Favorite Dentist in This Classic Comedy Sketch

adminAugust 26, 2026

A visit to the dentist is rarely something people look forward to. But when Tim Conway picks up the dental tools, an ordinary appointment becomes one of the funniest—and least professional—procedures in television comedy history.

In the legendary dentist sketch, Conway plays a nervous young dentist attempting to treat a patient portrayed by Harvey Korman. The procedure quickly goes wrong when the dentist accidentally injects himself with anesthetic, leaving parts of his body completely numb.

He may be the last dentist anyone should trust, but he remains our absolute favorite. 😂🦷

Tim Conway Begins His First Dental Procedure

Conway’s character enters the room with very little confidence.

He is inexperienced, visibly nervous and clearly overwhelmed by the responsibility of treating a real patient. Harvey Korman’s character is already anxious, and the dentist’s behavior gives him no reason to feel reassured.

Conway studies the equipment, tries to remember his training and prepares the anesthetic.

Then everything falls apart.

Instead of numbing the patient, the dentist accidentally injects himself.

The Anesthetic Creates Complete Chaos

The mistake initially appears manageable, but Conway’s body soon begins reacting to the anesthetic.

His hand becomes numb.

Then his arm stops cooperating.

As he attempts to continue the procedure, the effects spread and his movements become increasingly difficult to control.

Conway’s dentist knows he should stop, but he remains determined to finish the job. Every effort to behave professionally creates another hilarious physical complication.

Meanwhile, Harvey remains trapped in the dental chair, watching the man responsible for his treatment slowly lose control of his own body.

A Masterclass in Physical Comedy

The sketch is often celebrated as one of Tim Conway’s finest examples of physical comedy.

Conway makes the numbness appear completely convincing. His arm hangs uselessly, his posture changes and even basic movements become nearly impossible.

What makes the performance extraordinary is its precision.

Conway appears to have no control over his body, but every motion is carefully planned. He knows exactly how far to extend an arm, when to lose his balance and how long to delay before attempting the next task.

The physical chaos looks spontaneous, but the timing is masterful.

Harvey Korman Tries Desperately Not to Laugh

Harvey Korman faces two problems.

As the patient, he must survive treatment from a dentist who can barely stand.

As a performer, he must somehow remain in character while watching Tim Conway’s increasingly ridiculous movements from only a few feet away.

Harvey tries to look frightened and frustrated, but his composure begins to disappear.

He turns his face.

His shoulders start shaking.

Then the laughter becomes impossible to hide.

The audience is not only entertained by Conway’s performance—it is also watching Korman lose his battle against laughter in real time.

Tim Conway Maintains Complete Seriousness

While Harvey struggles, Conway remains remarkably committed to the dentist.

He does not smile at his own physical mistakes or acknowledge that the situation has become ridiculous. His character genuinely believes he can complete the procedure.

That seriousness makes everything funnier.

Even when his numb arm refuses to cooperate, Conway behaves as though a small adjustment will solve the problem. Each failed attempt leads to another, pushing Harvey closer to total collapse.

The Dental Tools Become Dangerous

A dental office is filled with instruments that require control and precision.

Unfortunately, Conway’s dentist possesses neither.

Once the anesthetic takes effect, every tool becomes a threat. The patient watches helplessly as the dentist struggles to hold equipment, maintain his balance and approach the dental chair.

Harvey’s character cannot be certain whether the dentist will fix his tooth or accidentally destroy the office.

The tools raise the stakes while giving Conway more opportunities for visual comedy.

Why the Dentist Sketch Works So Well

The routine begins with a universal fear: being treated by an incompetent medical professional.

Most people already feel vulnerable in a dentist’s chair. They cannot easily speak or escape once the procedure begins.

Conway exaggerates that anxiety until it becomes hilarious.

The patient quickly realizes that the dentist needs more help than he does, reversing the relationship between professional and customer.

Harvey is supposed to trust Conway. Instead, he watches in horror as the dentist becomes his own medical emergency.

Conway and Korman’s Chemistry Makes It Unforgettable

The sketch would be funny with any capable performers, but the partnership between Conway and Korman elevates it into a classic.

Conway’s understated chaos combines perfectly with Korman’s expressive reactions. Tim creates each new problem, and Harvey responds with fear, frustration and genuine laughter.

They understand each other’s rhythm.

Conway knows when Harvey is close to breaking and extends the physical gag. Korman’s reaction gives the audience permission to laugh even harder.

Their chemistry transforms a carefully constructed routine into something that feels completely spontaneous.

A Dentist Nobody Would Forget

Conway’s character may not complete the procedure successfully.

The patient may leave with the same dental problem—and several new concerns.

The office may never fully recover.

None of that matters to the audience.

The sketch delivers a brilliant combination of character comedy, physical precision and genuine laughter between two legendary performers.

Why Tim Conway Is Still Our Favorite Dentist

Would we trust him with an actual dental procedure?

Absolutely not.

Would we happily watch him attempt one again?

Every single time.

Tim Conway turns a frightening appointment into timeless comedy, proving that even a numb arm, a nervous patient and one disastrous injection can create television magic.

He may be the most incompetent dentist ever to appear on screen—but nobody makes a dental
