BILL HADER’S DANIEL PLAINVIEW TURNS MILKSHAKES INTO A COMEDY DISASTER! 😂🥤 THE LEGENDARY SNL SKETCH!

Some comedy sketches are funny because of their clever dialogue. Others become unforgettable because they take an already famous movie scene and transform it into something completely ridiculous.

That is exactly what Saturday Night Live accomplished with its hilarious 2008 sketch, “I Drink Your Milkshake,” starring Bill Hader as Daniel Plainview.

Inspired by the intense drama of There Will Be Blood, the sketch transforms one of the movie’s most memorable moments into an absurd Food Network television show. Instead of searching for oil, Daniel Plainview travels across the country looking for the perfect milkshake.

But there is one unusual problem: he does not always ask permission before drinking someone else’s!

With Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen, Tina Fey, Will Forte, and Kenan Thompson joining the fun, this sketch becomes an unforgettable combination of movie parody, celebrity impressions, and classic SNL comedy.

1. Bill Hader Becomes Daniel Plainview

Bill Hader’s portrayal of Daniel Plainview is the heart of the entire sketch.

Originally played by Daniel Day-Lewis in the 2007 film There Will Be Blood, Plainview is an ambitious oil businessman whose intense personality and intimidating presence make him one of modern cinema’s most memorable characters.

Hader captures the character’s recognizable appearance, dramatic delivery, and extraordinary confidence.

However, SNL introduces a completely different version of the character.

Instead of concentrating on oil production, Plainview announces that he has another passion: milkshakes.

He introduces viewers to his Food Network program, where he travels from town to town searching for the perfect cold drink.

The contrast between the seriousness of the original character and the ridiculous new mission creates the sketch’s central joke.

Hader plays the character with complete commitment, making the absurd premise even funnier.

2. Welcome to I Drink Your Milkshake!

The sketch begins with a wonderfully unexpected television introduction.

Daniel Plainview explains his background as an oilman before introducing his second great passion.

Milkshakes!

He travels across America visiting famous ice cream parlors and soda fountains, supposedly searching for the ultimate milkshake experience.

The opening theme song makes the concept even more ridiculous.

With Will Forte contributing to the musical introduction, the sketch immediately establishes its unusual combination of food television and dramatic movie parody.

The audience already recognizes Plainview’s intimidating personality, but seeing him present a cheerful food program creates an entertaining contrast.

It is a simple idea, but the execution makes it memorable.

3. The Giant Straw Changes Everything

The funniest part of the sketch arrives when Plainview approaches unsuspecting customers.

He introduces himself politely, explains his love of milkshakes, and announces that he is about to drink theirs.

Naturally, the customers are confused.

Then Plainview reveals his secret weapon.

An enormous straw!

With complete confidence, he explains that the straw reaches across the room and allows him to drink another person’s milkshake.

The ridiculous demonstration turns the famous movie reference into a visual comedy routine.

Hader recreates Daniel Plainview’s intimidating delivery while applying it to something as harmless as a milkshake.

The result is hilarious because he treats this completely unreasonable behavior as though it were an important business strategy.

His customers are understandably less enthusiastic.

4. Amy Poehler Plays H.W. Plainview

Amy Poehler joins the sketch as H.W. Plainview, Daniel’s son and partner in the unusual milkshake business.

Her character adds another layer of comedy to the situation.

The relationship between Daniel and H.W. references the complicated father-and-son dynamic from There Will Be Blood.

One particularly entertaining moment occurs when Daniel suddenly realizes that his son is missing.

He becomes dramatically upset, repeating the emotional declaration that he has abandoned his child.

The exaggerated reaction is especially funny because it recalls the intense emotional atmosphere of the original film.

Then H.W. returns, and Daniel immediately continues his milkshake adventure.

The transition from dramatic emotional distress to searching for another milkshake is a perfect example of SNL’s comedic approach.

5. Fred Armisen Introduces Anton Chigurh

Just when the sketch seems ridiculous enough, another famous movie character enters the story.

Fred Armisen appears as Anton Chigurh, the terrifying assassin from No Country for Old Men.

Originally portrayed by Javier Bardem, Chigurh is known for his unsettling personality, unusual speaking style, and infamous coin-flip decisions.

SNL places him inside Plainview’s milkshake television program as a special guest.

The contrast is brilliant.

One character wants to drink everyone’s milkshake, while the other brings the atmosphere of a deadly crime thriller into an ice cream shop.

When a customer refuses to surrender his drink, Chigurh offers to handle the situation.

He introduces his familiar coin-flip questioning style, transforming an ordinary disagreement over a milkshake into an absurdly tense confrontation.

The movie reference makes the scene even more entertaining for viewers who recognize the original character.

6. Tina Fey Brings Juno Into the Madness

Tina Fey also appears in the sketch as Juno, referencing the popular 2007 comedy-drama starring Elliot Page.

Her appearance introduces another recognizable movie personality into the already crowded parody.

The sketch cleverly combines several major films from the same period.

Rather than limiting itself to one movie reference, SNL creates a fictional television program where characters from completely different cinematic worlds can unexpectedly meet.

This makes the sketch feel like a bizarre crossover event.

Each performer brings a different personality, and the contrast between them creates additional opportunities for comedy.

7. Why This SNL Sketch Still Makes Fans Laugh

The brilliance of “I Drink Your Milkshake” comes from its understanding of the original movie references.

Viewers familiar with There Will Be Blood immediately recognize Daniel Plainview’s intimidating personality and famous milkshake speech.

Fans of No Country for Old Men recognize Anton Chigurh’s unusual approach to decision-making.

And audiences familiar with Juno can appreciate the unexpected addition of Tina Fey’s character.

But the sketch also works without knowing every reference.

Its central idea is simple enough: a very serious man has created a television show dedicated to drinking other people’s milkshakes.

That ridiculous premise, combined with Bill Hader’s committed performance, makes the comedy accessible and memorable.

Final Thoughts: One Giant Straw, Endless Comedy!

“I Drink Your Milkshake” is a wonderful example of Saturday Night Live’s ability to transform recognizable movie moments into completely unexpected comedy.

Bill Hader delivers an entertaining Daniel Plainview impression, Amy Poehler brings H.W. into the adventure, Fred Armisen introduces the terrifying Anton Chigurh, and Tina Fey adds another memorable movie reference.

Together, they create a bizarre Food Network adventure that turns ordinary milkshakes into the center of an increasingly ridiculous showdown.

One oilman. One giant straw. Several unsuspecting customers. And absolutely no milkshake is safe!

Which moment makes you laugh the most: Daniel Plainview’s giant straw, the dramatic return of H.W., or Anton Chigurh’s milkshake showdown? Share your favorite in the comments!
