But that is exactly the kind of world The Three Stooges created in Malice in the Palace.
Released in 1949 and starring Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Shemp Howard, the short throws the trio into an exotic treasure-hunt adventure where almost every serious situation is immediately destroyed by slapstick.
At the center of the story is an enormous diamond connected to the tomb of King Rootin Tootin. Villains want it. The Stooges eventually want to recover it for a reward. But before anyone can worry too much about treasure, Moe, Larry and Shemp have to survive their own restaurant.
And that may be the more dangerous challenge.
Three Waiters You Definitely Don’t Want Serving Your Table
The comedy begins with the Stooges working around a restaurant, where simply providing service becomes an adventure.
When they’re called, they rush into action with their usual enthusiasm and almost immediately collide with each other.
“If I hadn’t ducked, we’d have collided!”
It’s classic Stooge logic.
They are surrounded by food, customers and objects that can be dropped, thrown or accidentally placed on someone’s head.
Naturally, all three happen.
One unfortunate customer ends up tangled in the chaos as the Stooges attempt to “help” him. Their solution only makes his appearance increasingly ridiculous.
Instead of admitting they’ve made a mistake, they continue improvising.

A cat appears.
Then a dog becomes involved.

Then the truth becomes impossible to hide.
The dog and cat are discovered.
Dinner has officially collapsed.
The Villains Have Found Their Three Men
Watching this disaster gives the schemers an idea.
These three ridiculous waiters may be exactly the people they need.
The Stooges are approached with an offer.
Would they like to make a thousand dollars?
That gets their attention immediately.
Then they hear about the diamond.
It is worth a king’s ransom.
Now they are definitely interested.
But before the original plan can fully develop, another character arrives with unexpected news: the valuable diamond has already been taken.
Suddenly the map seems worthless.
The entire treasure scheme has changed.
And the Stooges discover that the supposedly impressive mastermind behind the plan isn’t quite as powerful as he appeared.
His regular job?
A doorman at the Oasis Hotel.
The Stooges respond exactly as you’d expect.
If he’s a doorman, they show him the door.
A 100-Carat Diamond Means Big Money
Then Moe, Larry and Shemp realize something important.
The stolen diamond isn’t simply valuable.
It’s government property.
If they can recover it, they might receive a huge reward.
The possibility of $50,000 immediately inspires dreams of wealth.
One of the best jokes comes when they imagine what that kind of money could buy.
Perhaps they could even afford a one-room apartment in Hollywood.
Even inside a wild treasure adventure, the Stooges manage to slip in a joke about expensive living.
Now they have a mission.
Find the villain.

Santa Claus Comes to the Palace
When challenged by a guard, the answer comes:
“Santa Claus.”
The guard doesn’t believe them.
“There ain’t no Santa Claus!”
The Stooges insist otherwise — and even claim they’ve brought him a present.
What follows is exactly the sort of “gift” you’d expect from Moe, Larry and Shemp.
Once the guard is dealt with, the trio sneaks inside.
Their objective is finally within reach.
They locate the man they’re after.
Even better, he’s wearing the diamond.
Now they only have to get it away from him.
The Evil Spirit of King Rootin Tootin
Rather than simply grabbing the jewel, the Stooges use trickery.
One pretends to be the evil spirit guarding the legendary diamond.
The performance is ridiculous.
And somehow it works.
The frightened target is ordered to surrender the jewel.
Then the “spirit” gives another command:
Stand on your head in the lily pond until further notice.
It’s a perfect Stooge solution.
Why simply steal a diamond when you can also convince the villain to perform an absurd physical stunt?
For a brief moment, the plan actually seems successful.
They have outsmarted the enemy.
Of course, success never lasts long in a Three Stooges short.

Soon more people arrive.
The Stooges scramble.
Threats are made.
Objects start flying.
The carefully planned treasure recovery dissolves into another physical battle.
The final minutes are packed with the kind of frantic movement that defines their best slapstick sequences.
Moe tries to maintain control.
Larry reacts to whatever disaster is closest.
Shemp brings his distinctive nervous energy and exaggerated responses.
Everyone is chasing everyone.
And somewhere in the middle of all this chaos is the precious diamond they’re supposed to be protecting.
Why Malice in the Palace Still Works
The brilliance of Malice in the Palace is that the treasure plot is almost secondary.
The diamond gives the characters somewhere to go.
The villains give them someone to fight.
But the real attraction is watching the Stooges interact with the world around them.
A restaurant becomes a disaster zone.
Dinner becomes an animal chase.
A treasure map becomes a collection of jokes.
A palace infiltration becomes a ridiculous disguise routine.
An ancient curse becomes another excuse for Moe, Larry and Shemp to get themselves into trouble.
The story keeps moving, but every destination exists primarily to create another comic opportunity.
