Carlton Takes His Legendary Dance Moves to the Streets! 😂🕺🔥

adminNovember 6, 2026

Imagine watching Michael Jackson perform at the height of his global fame. His music is playing, a crowd of excited children is dancing along, and suddenly a young boy in a bright red jacket steps into the spotlight. He moves with confidence, imitates the King of Pop’s signature style, and even moonwalks backward into the superstar himself.

It sounds like a scene created for a Hollywood movie. But it actually happened in one of the most memorable Pepsi commercials of the 1980s.

And that little boy? He was Alfonso Ribeiro, the performer who would eventually become one of television’s most recognizable sitcom characters: Carlton Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Today, millions of fans associate Ribeiro with Carlton’s distinctive personality and legendary dance routine. But long before he made audiences laugh alongside Will Smith, he was already building an extraordinary career as a young dancer and actor.

His journey from Broadway to a Pepsi commercial with Michael Jackson is a story worth remembering.

The Little Boy in the Red Jacket

The year was 1984, and Michael Jackson was one of the biggest stars in the world.

Following the enormous success of Thriller, Jackson had become a cultural phenomenon. His music videos, performances, fashion, and dance moves were influencing an entire generation.

Pepsi wanted to capture that excitement in its advertising campaign, bringing together the superstar and a new generation of young fans.

Among the children featured in the commercial was Alfonso Ribeiro.

Dressed in a bright red jacket, the young performer immediately attracted attention. He wasn’t simply standing in the background or following the crowd. He had the rhythm, confidence, and stage presence to hold his own in a commercial featuring one of the most famous entertainers on the planet.

One particularly memorable moment showed him performing a moonwalk before bumping into Michael Jackson. The encounter created a playful visual joke, as the young fan suddenly found himself face-to-face with his musical idol.

For viewers at the time, it was an entertaining advertising moment.

For audiences discovering the commercial years later, however, it became something even more fascinating: an early glimpse of the future Carlton Banks.

Broadway Had Already Discovered His Talent

The Pepsi commercial might seem like the beginning of Alfonso’s story, but he had already achieved something remarkable before appearing alongside Jackson.

Born in New York City in 1971, Ribeiro began performing at a very young age. His family recognized his interest in entertainment and encouraged him to develop his abilities.

He learned to dance, sing, and act, gradually building the skills needed for a professional career.

His breakthrough came in 1983, when he landed a leading role in the Broadway musical The Tap Dance Kid.

He was only around 12 years old.

The production gave Ribeiro an opportunity to demonstrate his dancing ability in front of live audiences. His footwork, timing, and confidence made him stand out, proving that he was more than a child with a promising hobby.

He was already a serious young performer.

That experience also helped him develop the discipline required to work in professional entertainment. Performing on Broadway meant rehearsals, demanding schedules, and the responsibility of delivering a strong performance night after night.

By the time the Pepsi opportunity arrived, Ribeiro had already developed the foundation that would support his career for decades.

The Unexpected Decision That Took Him to Michael Jackson

Getting the chance to appear in a Pepsi commercial with Michael Jackson was an extraordinary opportunity, but it wasn’t necessarily an easy decision.

Ribeiro was committed to The Tap Dance Kid on Broadway. Traveling from New York to California to film the commercial created a conflict with his theatrical responsibilities.

According to Ribeiro’s later recollections, the Broadway production strongly objected to his absence, and the situation became serious enough to involve legal threats.

His father, however, believed the opportunity was too important to ignore.

The family ultimately decided that Alfonso should take the chance.

It was a bold decision for a young performer whose career was still developing. On one side was an established Broadway production. On the other was an opportunity to appear alongside Michael Jackson during one of the most significant periods of his career.

The gamble paid off.

Ribeiro later recalled in an interview with NPR that the Pepsi commercial had an unexpected impact on the musical. Within approximately 48 hours of the commercial’s first broadcast, the production had reportedly sold out performances for the following two months.

The young performer had suddenly become part of a major advertising moment, and the experience introduced him to an enormous audience.

The Moonwalk Moment That Fans Still Remember

What makes the 1984 commercial so entertaining today is the way it captures the excitement surrounding Michael Jackson.

The music, street-dancing atmosphere, and enthusiastic young performers create an energetic celebration of the Pepsi campaign.

But knowing who Alfonso Ribeiro would become adds another layer to the experience.

Look closely at the boy in the red jacket.

His movements are confident, his expressions are lively, and his imitation of Jackson’s dance style shows a natural understanding of performance.

The moonwalk encounter is particularly memorable because it combines humor with the excitement of meeting an idol.

There is something charming about seeing a young dancer trying to impress Michael Jackson and suddenly finding himself right beside the superstar.

For fans of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the moment also reveals that Ribeiro’s dancing talent was never an unexpected discovery.

He had been performing long before Carlton Banks entered television history.

Six Years Later, Carlton Banks Changed Everything

In 1990, audiences were introduced to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The sitcom starred Will Smith as a teenager from Philadelphia who moves into the luxurious home of his wealthy relatives in California. Alfonso Ribeiro played his cousin Carlton Banks, a character whose personality was almost the complete opposite of Will’s.

Will was relaxed, mischievous, and spontaneous.

Carlton was disciplined, ambitious, formal, and often hilariously confident in his own abilities.

Their contrasting personalities became one of the show’s greatest comedic strengths.

But Carlton had a secret weapon: dancing.

Whenever the right music played, he could suddenly launch into an enthusiastic routine, complete with exaggerated gestures and unmistakable facial expressions.

His famous dance, associated with Tom Jones’s “It’s Not Unusual,” eventually became one of the most recognizable routines in sitcom history.

What audiences loved was not simply the choreography. It was Carlton’s complete commitment to the performance.

He danced as if he were the greatest entertainer in the room, even when everyone else was laughing.

And that was precisely what made the character so funny.

From a Childhood Performer to a Television Dance Icon

Ribeiro’s career continued long after The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air became a success.

He worked in acting, directing, and television hosting, showing that his talents extended well beyond one famous sitcom character.

In 2014, he returned to the competitive dance floor as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Partnered with Witney Carson, he won the show’s nineteenth season.

For longtime fans, the victory felt like a full-circle moment.

The boy who once danced beside Michael Jackson had grown into an accomplished performer whose dancing ability was being celebrated all over again.

The Carlton Dance had also developed a life of its own. It became a recognizable piece of pop culture, recreated by fans, celebrities, and audiences across different generations.

Ribeiro’s return to the dance floor reminded everyone that behind the comedy was a performer with genuine experience and impressive skill.

The Boy in Red Was Always Destined to Entertain

There is something remarkable about watching Alfonso Ribeiro’s journey in reverse.

First, there is the young boy in the red jacket, dancing beside Michael Jackson in 1984. Then comes the Broadway performer developing his skills on stage. Finally, there is Carlton Banks, the unforgettable sitcom character whose dance moves became part of television history.

Each stage reveals a different side of the same entertainer.

The Pepsi commercial wasn’t simply a lucky appearance. It was another opportunity for a talented young performer who had already spent years learning how to command an audience.

And perhaps that is the most fascinating part of the story.

Before the sweaters, the jokes, and the legendary Carlton Dance, there was a little boy who already knew how to make people stop and watch.

So the next time you revisit Michael Jackson’s famous Pepsi commercial, look beyond the superstar for a moment.

Find the little boy in the red jacket.

Because long before America knew him as Carlton Banks, Alfonso Ribeiro was already dancing his way into entertainment history.
