“Any Women?” – A Classic Comedy Scene From Monty Python’s Life of Brian

adminAugust 28, 2026

Few comedy groups could transform a dark and serious situation into absurd entertainment as brilliantly as Monty Python. The famous “Any Women?” scene from Monty Python’s Life of Brian is a perfect example of the group’s fearless humor, clever satire, and unforgettable comic timing.

Set during a public stoning, the scene introduces a crowd that appears strangely excited about the punishment. However, several audience members are hiding an obvious secret: they are women disguised as men because women are supposedly forbidden from attending.

What follows is one of the movie’s most memorable comedy sequences.

A Serious Question Creates Immediate Suspicion

Before the punishment begins, an official asks whether there are any women present. The disguised women quickly lower their voices and insist that everyone in the crowd is male.

Their fake beards and exaggerated masculine voices make the deception obvious to viewers, but the characters remain completely confident that their disguises are convincing.

This contrast creates the first major laugh. Nobody genuinely believes what is happening, yet everyone continues participating in the ridiculous performance.

The official suspects the truth, but enforcing the rule becomes almost as absurd as the rule itself.

The Crowd Is More Chaotic Than the Criminal

The condemned man is accused of saying a forbidden religious name, but his attempt to explain the situation only causes more trouble. Each time he repeats the word, the crowd becomes increasingly outraged.

The irony is that the spectators seem far more aggressive than the person being punished.

Instead of waiting for the official process, they are eager to throw stones. Their excitement reveals the hypocrisy at the heart of the scene: the crowd claims to defend religious respect while behaving with cruelty and complete disregard for order.

Monty Python turns this contradiction into sharp comedy without interrupting the fast-moving jokes.

Why the “Any Women?” Scene Is So Funny

The scene combines several kinds of humor. There is visual comedy in the obviously fake disguises, verbal comedy in the characters’ exchanges, and social satire in the strange rules everyone follows without question.

The performers deliver the dialogue with total seriousness. Nobody behaves as though the situation is funny, which makes every ridiculous moment even more effective.

The sequence also builds carefully. One misunderstanding leads to another, the crowd becomes increasingly impatient, and the official gradually loses control. By the time the punishment begins, nearly everything has gone wrong.

Monty Python’s Timeless Satirical Style

Released in 1979, Monty Python’s Life of Brian became famous for using absurd comedy to examine authority, conformity, religious extremism, and mob behavior.

The “Any Women?” scene remains memorable because its humor works on multiple levels. Viewers can enjoy the disguises and physical comedy while also recognizing the deeper criticism of unfair rules and collective hypocrisy.

It is bold, uncomfortable, intelligent, and extremely funny—all qualities associated with Monty Python at its best.

For fans of British comedy, vintage movies, and short sketches that deliver both laughter and satire, this scene remains essential viewing. Decades later, one simple question—“Any women?”—is still enough to remind audiences why Life of Brian became a comedy classic.
