THE SURPRISING STORY BEHIND ALAN JACKSON’S “THAT’S THE WAY LOVE GOES” — A HEARTFELT TRIBUTE TO MERLE HAGGARD!

Some country songs carry stories that go far beyond their melodies. They connect generations of musicians, preserve the memories of legendary performers, and remind audiences why traditional country music remains so special. Alan Jackson’s recording of “That’s the Way Love Goes” is one of those songs.

At first, listeners might hear it as another beautiful country ballad performed by one of Nashville’s most recognizable voices. But there is a much deeper story behind Jackson’s version. It is a personal tribute to Merle Haggard, one of the greatest influences on his musical career.

What makes the story even more remarkable is that Haggard himself had originally recorded the song as a tribute to another country legend: Lefty Frizzell.

It is a musical connection that stretches across generations.

1. A Song With a Remarkable History

“That’s the Way Love Goes” was not originally written by Merle Haggard.

The song was composed by country music songwriters Lefty Frizzell and Whitey Shafer. Johnny Rodriguez recorded it first, releasing it as a single in 1973.

However, the song became particularly associated with Merle Haggard after he recorded his own version in 1983.

It became the title track of his album That’s the Way Love Goes, released that year.

Haggard’s interpretation achieved tremendous success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and earning the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male, in 1984.

His recording helped transform the song into one of the most recognizable traditional country ballads of its era.

For many country music fans, Haggard’s version became the definitive interpretation.

2. Merle Haggard: The Legend Who Inspired Alan Jackson

To understand why Alan Jackson chose this particular song, it is important to understand Merle Haggard’s influence on traditional country music.

Haggard was one of the defining artists of the Bakersfield sound, a style characterized by electric guitars, strong rhythms, and a distinctive working-class perspective.

His recordings helped shape the direction of country music throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Songs such as “Mama Tried,” “Okie from Muskogee,” and “Sing Me Back Home” established his reputation as an extraordinary songwriter and performer.

Alan Jackson grew up appreciating this traditional country sound.

Throughout his own career, Jackson remained committed to the musical traditions represented by Haggard, George Jones, and other legendary performers.

His music frequently featured the straightforward storytelling, steel guitars, and heartfelt melodies that defined classic country.

Jackson even joked about once being described as “Merle Haggard on milk” during his early career.

The comparison reflected the obvious musical connection between the two artists.

3. The Hidden Meaning Behind Alan Jackson’s Recording

Alan Jackson eventually recorded “That’s the Way Love Goes” for his 2021 album Where Have You Gone.

However, his decision to include the song was not simply about choosing a familiar country classic.

Jackson specifically wanted to honor Merle Haggard.

In an interview discussing the album, Jackson explained that he had wanted to record something for Haggard ever since his passing in 2016.

He also described how he understood the history behind Haggard’s version.

Haggard had recorded the song as a tribute to Lefty Frizzell, and Jackson wanted to follow a similar tradition by recording it in honor of Haggard.

This detail gives the song a particularly meaningful connection.

One legendary artist honored another, and years later, another generation continued that tradition.

It was not simply a cover. It was a gesture of respect toward the musicians who helped shape country music.

4. A Different Kind of Country Performance

Alan Jackson’s interpretation maintains the traditional character that made the original recording so memorable.

Rather than dramatically transforming the song, he approaches it with a familiar country arrangement and a warm, understated vocal performance.

His delivery allows the melody and emotional message to remain at the center.

The recording features the musical elements that longtime country fans appreciate, including expressive steel guitar and traditional instrumentation.

Jackson’s voice gives the song a personal quality.

There is a sense of familiarity in the way he approaches the melody, as though he is returning to the music that inspired him when he first began pursuing his career.

That connection between the performer and the material makes the recording especially meaningful.

5. Part of the Album Where Have You Gone

“That’s the Way Love Goes” appeared as an extra track on Alan Jackson’s 2021 album Where Have You Gone.

Released on May 14, 2021, the album represented a strong commitment to traditional country music.

Jackson reunited with longtime producer Keith Stegall and worked with musicians who helped shape the classic country sound associated with his earlier recordings.

The project included songs about family, memories, relationships, and the changing nature of country music.

Tracks such as “You’ll Always Be My Baby,” “Where Her Heart Has Always Been,” and “The Older I Get” demonstrated the personal and reflective direction of the album.

The Merle Haggard tribute fit naturally into this musical collection.

It represented Jackson’s appreciation for the traditions that had influenced his entire career.

6. Why This Tribute Means So Much to Country Music Fans

There is something special about musicians honoring the artists who came before them.

Country music has always depended on storytelling and tradition.

Artists learn from earlier generations, develop their own voices, and eventually pass those influences along to younger performers.

Alan Jackson’s recording demonstrates how this musical connection continues.

Merle Haggard honored Lefty Frizzell through his interpretation of the song.

Jackson then honored Haggard by recording the same composition years later.

The song became part of a continuing tradition of musical appreciation.

For longtime fans, listening to Jackson’s version may also encourage them to revisit Haggard’s original interpretation and discover the history behind the recording.

It is a reminder that great country songs can have lives far beyond their original releases.

7. A Legacy That Continues Through Music

Alan Jackson and Merle Haggard represent different generations of country music, but their artistic values share important similarities.

Both artists built their reputations through traditional sounds, memorable melodies, and songs that connected with everyday experiences.

Their music never depended entirely on passing trends.

Instead, they focused on creating recordings that could remain meaningful for decades.

Jackson’s tribute is particularly touching because it reveals the admiration he had for Haggard.

It also demonstrates that musical legacies are not preserved only through awards, documentaries, or historical recordings.

Sometimes, the most meaningful tribute is simply another artist picking up a guitar and singing a song that mattered to someone who came before him.

Final Thoughts: A Song That Connects Three Country Legends

“That’s the Way Love Goes” carries a remarkable history.

Written by Lefty Frizzell and Whitey Shafer, first recorded by Johnny Rodriguez, made famous through Merle Haggard’s interpretation, and later revisited by Alan Jackson, the song connects several important chapters of country music history.

Jackson’s version is a heartfelt reminder of the influence Haggard had on his musical journey.
