Elvis Presley’s Epic Guitar Moment in “Baby, What You Want Me to Do” – The ’68 Comeback Special That Rocked the World

Some musical performances never lose their magic, no matter how many decades pass. Elvis Presley’s unforgettable performance of “Baby, What You Want Me to Do” during his legendary 1968 Comeback Special is one of those moments. With his guitar in hand, a powerful voice, and an unmistakable stage presence, Elvis reminded the world why he was still the King of Rock and Roll.

The performance captured something special: an artist reconnecting with the music that made him famous, enjoying the moment, and showing an entirely new generation what made him a musical legend.

A Comeback That Changed Everything

By 1968, Elvis Presley had spent several years concentrating largely on Hollywood movies and their soundtracks. Although he remained a major star, many fans were eager to see him return to live musical performances.

The NBC television special, commonly known as the ’68 Comeback Special, became the perfect opportunity.

Wearing his iconic black leather outfit, Elvis stepped back into the spotlight with the

confidence and charisma that had captivated audiences during the early days of rock and roll.

Rather than relying entirely on elaborate production or choreography, the special included intimate musical sessions that allowed viewers to experience Elvis as a musician. Surrounded by fellow performers, he rediscovered the excitement of playing music together.

“Baby, What You Want Me to Do” – Pure Blues and Rock and Roll

Originally written and recorded by blues musician Jimmy Reed, “Baby, What You Want Me to Do” became a perfect choice for Elvis’s energetic musical style.

The song’s blues foundation gave Elvis plenty of room to experiment with rhythm, phrasing, and vocal expression.

From the opening moments, the performance feels relaxed but full of energy. Elvis moves naturally with the rhythm, delivering the lyrics with a playful confidence that makes the song feel spontaneous.

His guitar playing adds another layer to the performance. Rather than simply standing in front of the musicians and singing, Elvis becomes part of the musical conversation, responding to the rhythm and energy around him.

Every movement, glance, and musical phrase contributes to the atmosphere.

The Guitar Moment That Fans Still Love

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this performance is watching Elvis with his guitar.

There is something particularly appealing about seeing such a legendary entertainer enjoying the simple pleasure of making music. His playing, expressions, and interaction with the other musicians reveal a performer who is completely comfortable in his musical environment.

The guitar is not merely a stage accessory. It is part of the performance’s personality.

Elvis combines blues-inspired guitar rhythms with his unmistakable vocal delivery, creating a sound that feels both traditional and unmistakably his own.

His confidence never overwhelms the music. Instead, he allows the rhythm to breathe, making the performance feel like an exciting gathering of musicians rather than a carefully staged television production.

That natural chemistry is a major reason why fans continue returning to this particular moment.

The Magic of Playing Together

The ’68 Comeback Special featured intimate musical sessions that brought Elvis together with musicians who understood his early musical roots.

These performances offered something different from the highly produced musical numbers audiences had become accustomed to seeing in his films.

There was laughter, improvisation, musical interaction, and a sense of friendship between the performers.

“Baby, What You Want Me to Do” captures that atmosphere beautifully.

The musicians create a lively blues foundation while Elvis brings his unmistakable personality to the song. Their interaction gives the performance an authentic energy that is difficult to reproduce.

It is not just about hitting the right notes. It is about feeling the music, listening to one another, and allowing the performance to develop naturally.

Why This Performance Still Matters Today

More than half a century later, the 1968 Comeback Special remains an important chapter in Elvis Presley’s career.

It reminded audiences that Elvis was far more than a movie star or a familiar face on television. He was a gifted musical performer with deep connections to blues, gospel, country, and rock and roll.

The special also helped reintroduce his live musical identity to the public and paved the way for the next phase of his performing career.

For longtime fans, these performances bring back memories of Elvis at his musical best. For younger audiences discovering him today, they provide an opportunity to appreciate his talent beyond the familiar photographs and famous songs.

And “Baby, What You Want Me to Do” is a particularly enjoyable example of that talent.

A Moment Worth Watching Again

There are countless memorable Elvis Presley performances, but some stand out because they reveal the person behind the legend.

This guitar-filled blues performance does exactly that.

Elvis looks comfortable, confident, and genuinely connected to the music. His voice, guitar, and playful personality come together in a way that feels timeless.

The ’68 Comeback Special was more than a television appearance. It was a powerful reminder of what made Elvis Presley extraordinary.

The King was back, and the music spoke for itself.
